  POLL: Should a "True Grit" virgin (me) see the John Wayne version 1st?

  gregor posted a "true grit" thread a few days ago but i didn't want to read it for fear of "spoilers".

  as a jw youth, i was not allowed to watch the original "true grit" because it was too violent.

  anyway, on to the opinion poll: for those who have seen both the original and the coen brother's remake, would you recommend seeing the john wayne version first?.

  our daughter is writing down some of her experiences growing up as a witness.

  i thought i would share a sample of her writing.

  it is fun for us to read, but a little sad to see the guilt she placed upon herself for doing normal kid things....... .

  It was read at today's meeting exactly as you posted it ( except for a few stumbles by the WT Conductor.)

  Thanks to the continued efforts of the collective Faithful and Discreet Slave (Simon, Yknot, fading elders, etc.) we are fed at the right time. (Before the local JWs get it.)

  By the time the movie "Rooster Cogburn" (also starring John Wayne) came out, we were old enough and my parents had mellowed enough, to let us go see it.

  If I remember correctly though, there were at least one or two scenes where my Mom was pounding on my Dad's arm that we should all walk out and make a self-righteous JW scene.

  We learned pretty early on to NOT go to a movie with our parents.

  miseryloveselders: "Then I found out it was a Coen Brothers film, and in my opinion, they can do no wrong."

  Yeah, that's the main reason I'm interested in seeing this film. Since I like the Coen bros so much, I'm tempted to see the remake first for maximum impact.

  But, villabolo makes a good point as well. By seeing the original first, I'll get a good baseline. Then whatever quirkiness the Coen brothers are sure to throw in will be more apparent.

  Anyone else?

  Ur still smarter than me.

  Probably not a whole lot of comfort there.

  As for your looks, well, at least in our screwed up American culture, guys are still allowed quite a few more whacks with the "ugly stick" than women are. Unfair, but seems to be true.

  As a JW youth, I was not allowed to watch the original "True Grit" because it was too violent. I always assumed it was rated "R". Now I find out you can get it on Amazon and it's rated "G".

  Anyway, on to the Opinion Poll: For those who have seen both the original and the Coen brother's remake, would you recommend seeing the John Wayne version first?

  Why or why not?

  And, I know this might be tricky, but try not to include any major plot "spoilers" in your reply.

  i always thought they were the most boring things i'd ever seen.

  a picture of someone preaching in a different land every month.. i always ended up hanging something far more entertaining, like an nfl calendar..

  My favorite feature is the reminder for "Magazine Day".

  It's EVERY, FRIKKIN' SATURDAY!!!

  Question on Donations By Credit and Debit Card

  recently there has been mention of assemblies with credit card machines for contributions.

  it was also mentioned on the last six screens call i think at the stanley theatre.

  has any one seen this taking place?

  We've been attending DCs at the Cow Palace in San Francisco for many years. ATMs have always been there.

  However, it was either 2009 or 2010 that a new "loving provision from the Slave Class" made its appearance: Donation by Credit Card or Debit Card!
